Questions homeowners askSolar detach and reinstall, answered plainly
Do I have to remove my solar panels to replace my roof?
Yes. A roofer cannot tear off and re-shingle underneath an array. The panels and rails come off, the roof is replaced, and the system goes back on with new roof attachments. The work should be done by a licensed solar contractor under a permit, not by the roofer's crew.
How much does solar detach and reinstall cost in Tampa Bay?
It is priced per panel. The price depends on the number of panels, the roof material, whether the system is rail-mounted or rail-less, and whether the roof material is changing. We do a free site inspection before quoting so the number on the contract is the number you pay.
Who should remove the panels, the roofer or a solar company?
A licensed electrical contractor. In Florida the work means disconnecting a permitted electrical system and re-penetrating the new roof, and it requires a permit. Roofers are not licensed for it, and a side crew that skips the permit leaves you with no inspection and no recourse if the roof leaks at an attachment.
Will removing and reinstalling the panels void my solar warranty?
Not when a licensed, manufacturer-authorized contractor does it. We are certified with Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge, Generac, Fronius, SMA and REC, and the reinstall is permitted and inspected, so your equipment warranties stay intact. Unlicensed removal is what voids warranties.
Can you remove a Tesla solar system for a new roof?
Yes. We are Tesla-certified and handle Tesla panel and Powerwall systems for roof replacements, usually sooner than Tesla's own scheduling allows. Tesla Solar Roof tiles are a different product and are not covered by this service.
Does my insurance roof claim cover removing the solar panels?
Often, yes. Detach and reinstall is a normal line item on a roof replacement claim when the panels have to come off to do the work. We provide a written scope and can meet your adjuster on site.
How long are the panels off my roof?
Only as long as the roof takes. We schedule around the roofer: panels come off just before tear-off and go back on as soon as the roof is finished and inspected. The system is then re-energized and checked.
Do you work on systems you didn't install?
Most of our detach and reinstall work is on systems other companies installed, including companies that are no longer in business. We inspect the rails and wiring before quoting and tell you if anything needs to be corrected while the panels are off.
