Permits in Tampa

Who issues the permit, and who pulls it

Inside the city limits, the City of Tampa Construction Services issues the permits through Accela. Roof-mounted solar is an electrical trade permit; residential trade permits auto-issue on payment once the plan set (array layout, wiring, disconnects, attachment detail, wind and structural calcs where required) is complete. Roof replacement is a separate Roof Covering Replacement permit, with inspections done virtually through VuSpex. Outside the city line, in Carrollwood, Westchase, Citrus Park and Town 'n' Country, Hillsborough County Development Services handles it instead, and the county requires engineer-sealed plans. We pull permits with both offices every month.

Utility: TECO (Tampa Electric)

TECO serves all of Hillsborough County. Systems of 10 kW AC and under use TECO's Tier 1 interconnection with no application fee; TECO's approval can take up to 30 days after the passed inspection, then it sets the net meter. We file and track it.

Local knowledge

What is specific to Tampa

Historic districtsHyde Park, Tampa Heights and Ybor City need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the City for exterior work. Solar isn't named in the rules, so we check with the historic preservation office before a roof or array in those neighborhoods is designed.
Older roofs in South Tampa and Seminole HeightsMany 1920s to 1960s homes have roofs at the end of their life with solar already on them from the 2015 to 2022 wave. That's our most common Tampa job: panels off, new GAF or Owens Corning system, panels back on, one permit set and one company.
Flood zones on Davis Islands and the bayfrontA roof plus solar on a bayfront home can trigger the FEMA substantial-improvement rule. We raise it at the quote.
Permits void after 180 days idleTampa voids a permit after 180 days without activity. We schedule inspections so a job never sits.
Why one license matters

When the roof leaks under the array, there's one number to call

In Florida, solar work needs an electrical or solar license and roof work needs a roofing license. Almost nobody holds both. Fused does, so when we replace a roof and reinstall the panels in Tampa, the roofing warranty and the 25-year no-leak guarantee on the attachments come from the same company.

Questions from Tampa homeowners

Tampa solar and roofing, answered plainly

Who replaces a roof with solar panels on it in Tampa?

A contractor that holds both a Florida roofing license and a solar or electrical license. Fused holds roofing license CCC1331058 and electrical license EC13014750, is based in Tampa, and does the roof and the panel detach and reinstall under one contract with the City of Tampa or Hillsborough County permits pulled by us.

Do you service solar systems in Tampa that another company installed?

Yes. Fused is a service company first. We work on any brand and any installer's system in Tampa, including Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge, Generac, Fronius and SMA, and including homes whose installer has gone out of business. A flat $395 on-site diagnostic comes with a written report.

Do I need a permit for solar panels in Tampa?

Yes. Inside the city, it's an electrical trade permit from the City of Tampa Construction Services; in unincorporated Hillsborough it's the county's electrical trade permit with engineer-sealed plans. Fused pulls it under its electrical license and schedules the inspection.

How long does solar installation take in Tampa?

Most Fused installations run 6 to 8 weeks from signed contract to permission to operate: engineering and the permit first, one to two days on the roof, then the inspection and TECO's net-meter swap.
